Long Hair Don’t Care - An Ode to Hair Growth Supplements
Remember my infamous rant about short hair a few months ago? Yeah. Hi. I changed my mind again.
I had a great 10ish month run with my beautiful, versatile pixie cut, but the maintenance has proved to be too much as well as…I got bored. Therefore…YES - I’M GROWING MY HAIR OUT.
One month of growtH
I’ve had short to medium length locks all my life, but now that I’ve cut off all of the maltreated hair, I’ve decided to start anew. I’ve been more attentive to the products I use on my mane in the past few years. Basically, I’ve become a product snob/label reader. You know…the people that stand in the middle of the beauty aisle in the drugstore reading every single label and ingredient on every single bottle? Yeah. That would be me. Judge me, but my hair is in it’s best shape ever.
In my serious attempt to grow this now pixie mess into a head of thick, shiny, delicious locks as fast as possible, I took the plunge…
I ordered a one month supply of Hairfinity. The hair growth supplement is one of a group of essential hair vitamins helping to combat hair growth stress. I asked around and read a zillion reviews before buying a bottle. I was hesitant to try it due to the only reported side effect being acne. Fortunately for me, I haven’t experienced a change in the texture of my skin and my hair has grown over an inch in it’s first month; the expected growth is an inch a month. The directions state two pills a day, but since it didn’t specify a time, I take mine before bed and drink a ton of water. My logic: cell renewal goes into hyper speed during your sleep cycle, so why not give it some extra gas? I’m onto my second bottle and couldn’t be happier with what it’s doing for my mane.
If you’re weary of jumping into Hairfinity or just want to know some alternatives, here are a list of five dietary supplements to try on your journey to stronger, longer, healthier hair.
MSM, the main ingredient in Hairfintity, is a form of sulfur which promotes the production of collagen and keratin in the body. Because it is found in many foods but lost after cooking, it is necessary as a supplement in order to speed up your hair strand’s growth cycles.
Folic Acid, also known as B9 or folate, boosts cell development and renewal. It is one of the main elements in prenatal vitamins and the reason that pregnant women “glow” in their super strong, shiny hair and nails.
Vitamin E pumps up the growth of capillaries, increases blood circulation and boosts oxygen supply to the scalp. Basically, your cells TURN UP on this vitamin. Taking a supplement or massaging the oil in slows down the aging process and encourages healthy growth, thickening and shine.
Biotin is the most famous of the hair growth supplement family. It’s responsible for the metabolism of carbohydrates and fat, the production of keratin and the increase of hair elasticity. It also protects against breakage, the hair growth nemesis.
Omega Oil is comprised of essential fatty acids that can’t be produced naturally in the body. Besides regulating immune function, it nourishes hair follicles, prevents hair breakage and loss and increases strength and thickness.
It isn’t recommended that you take more than one supplement at a time, but taking one type regularly with a lot of water, sleep and good food should have you Rapunzeling in no time.
